ABOUT MY NEW WEB SITE...In this incarnation of my web site I have decided to just go ahead and do something that I have wanted to do for a long time. I have decided to catalogue and display a large selection of my art work regardless of medium or theme. (It was all created by me, so why should I show this photograph, but not this drawing?) Everyone talks about only showing your best work and finding a voice. Heck, I have even propagated these self same ideas. But to be honest, it seems to me that this is a contemporary notion. I will readily admit that this concept is important for finding a job, getting representation in a gallery, or impressing a collector. But, as an accurate portrayal of the depth and scope of an artist's work and commitment to making art, this definition of a "voice" does not work. Perhaps the definition of an artistic voice shouldn't be interpreted as a specialization in one medium, one style, or one theme, but instead should be defined as a common thread that reoccurs across the body of an artist's work. (To contribute to this discussion check out my blog in Random Thoughts.) It is with this reasoning in mind that I have decided to inundate this web site with a large variety of my work, both past and present. For you see, despite the variety of mediums that my work encompasses, I have noticed that there is a commonality that when viewed 'en mass'. Everything that I do informs and influences subsequent work. Objects that I encounter while hiking get photographed, scanned, abstracted into drawing and illustrations, and sometimes even reemerge as sculptures. So, the plan is to continue adding collections and a variety of artwork until the web site is completely inundated with work, at which time I will switch the collections over to an archive and create a portfolio that changes and updates with the most inspiring work. I hope that you will find this rendition of my web site interesting and the work compelling. Yours Truly, Erin Sparler |
